The fifth and sixth books in the Sons of Destiny series, according to Johnson, almost coincide in time frame and locale, but are told from separate points of view. (I do, by the way, recommend reading her Shifting Plains before reading this book, since it gives much more information on the society the central female character comes from than finds its way into this book. And you can be ahead of the male hero at times…) It opens with Amara and Arora, twins from the Shifting Plains, in the middle of an ocean. Amara, who is a highly accomplished shape-shifter (in fact, she was in training to become queen of the Shifterai when circumstances forced them to flee the plains), has taken on the shape of an aquatic life-form that can drink sea-water and is a powerful swimmer, and they’ve found enough wreckage that they’ve made a raft of sorts, with a half-barrel to catch rain-water for Arora, who can’t shift her shape but has other magic that has sent mages chasing them. Of course, they end up beaching on Nightfall island. Meantime, Trevan and Koranen are complaining because they’re horny; it wasn’t so bad when none of the Sons of Destiny had access to women, but now that their four older brothers are married they’re really feeling put upon. Koranen, in fact, is still a virgin; his fiery nature makes sex, or even necking, painful to his partner. While he also has the ability to swiftly heal any burns, so no permanent harm is done, that’s a day late and a dollar short, so to speak. But that’ll be dealt with in the seventh book. Trevan finds Amara in the forest near the north end of the island and leads her to the castle where they live, both flying as hawks. There’s the usual run of misunderstandings between Trevan and Amara, and Amara and Kelly don’t get along well either, but as you’d expect it eventually settles down. I liked this one rather better than the previous two.

The Song The Sons of Destiny Book 4 Jean Johnson 9780425219294 Books Reviews

I finished the whole series. More because I like to finish what I start whenever possible, than for any other reason. After being thoroughly impressed by this author science-fiction books, I thought I'd try her other books despite my initial misgivings. Sure enough, I was disapointed, but to be fair, Romance is definitely not my favored genre, and she obvioulsy grew in skill later in her career. Suffice it to say that compared to her sci-fi series, this is a shadow of a shadow. The great weakness throughout is the very weak character development imho cookie cutter templates and rationales. Whith the usual failing of the romance genre for me being the primary rationale of the central characters is of course....romance, lust, love or a combination thereof.... oh well I was definitely not in the right readership for this. I found the information i was looking for anyway She'd have sold more books as a science fiction writer. she's just an average romance writer, but she could be an astounding author of sf. 3.5 stars for me. but because of my obvious bias against the genre, if you are looking for a romance fix this might be a 4 so I leave it at that.
The Cat and this one take place during the same overall time frame, though from separate points of view. Where that one told the tale of the courtship of Trevan the Cat and the shapeshifter Mara, this one tells the parallel story of Trevan’s twin Rydan the Storm and Mara’s twin the magical source Rora. Rydan has always been something of a recluse even among his brothers; for years he has been awake most nights and slept during the daytime (though sunlight doesn’t injure him as such). Rora is highly sensitive to emotions, and she realizes quickly that Rydan is hypersensitive to the emotions of others, so that strong emotions in his vicinity are acutely painful to him. And so, unwilling as he is, she gradually gains his trust and eventually love. Kind of interesting to read the two parallel stories not far apart, though the external story is pretty much the same for both books.
The fourth book in her “Sons of Destiny” series continues enjoyable. This one doesn’t introduce any new major characters to Nightfall, but rather brings the widow Mariel, best friend of Dominor’s new wife Serina (whose courtship was the central theme of the previous book, The Master), along with her ten-year-old son Mikor, to Nightfall. Mariel is a healer, and the hope is that she can do something for Evanor, the fourth oldest brother, who lost his voice in the battle near the end of The Wolf. Since his voice was the source of all his magic, he’s been very depressed since that happened. But, as one would expect from this series, he and Mariel have the instant hots for each other when they meet, and there’s the added bit that Mikor, though he likes Evanor and will be happy to have him as his new papa, is used to bursting into Mariel’s room any time he feels like it, which complicates their getting down to any serious sex. And in parallel with this, the king of Katan, who’d exiled the brothers to Nightfall, starts getting rumors that there are women on the island, which he’d forbidden, so he prepares an invasion fleet to go see what’s going on there. (This might be a good time to list the brothers each set of twins’ names end with the same syllable. Saber the Sword, Wolfer the Wolf; Dominor the Master, Evanor the Song; Trevan the Cat, Rydan the Storm; Koranen the Flame, and Morganen the Mage. Of course, they’re all mages of some sort, but Morganen is the most powerful.) Good fun as usual.
