This was the last book (to date), of the series. I gave this book three stars mainly because I felt the story dragged a little. Also there lacked a certain amount of "passion" between the two lovers....plenty of lust, but not the usual spark between them, that makes you yearn to turn the next page in anticipation.

Once again I was not disappointed in the basic plot of the story, just in the delivery from imagination to paper to book to reader, which would be me. Simply too blah for my tastes. I like to read a book where the characters jump off the page and the passion is so hot you have to sip ice cold drinks while reading.....just to maintain. 😳

Some readers out there might find this book to be perfectly acceptable to their tastes.......maybe I'm too lusty?? 😜 So happy reading and may your outcome of this story be better than mine.

What a Lass Wants by Rowan Keats is another adventure of intrigue and danger, in this fourth installment of the Claimed by the Highlander series. With each new story her writing and storytelling get better as she develops a romance during these politically, treacherous times. Caitrina de Montfort is caught in the middle of a plot to spy on the pregnant queen of Scotland. Bran MacLean has stolen a valuable treasure and now is in hiding as one of the queen’s nobleman. Caitrina finds the treasure and uses it as blackmail to enlist him to help her find her sister, who is being held captive by the English.

Caitrina is a feisty heroine and finds herself in between a rock and a hard place. She’s loyal to her queen and would never betray her but she will do what it takes to get her sister release. I liked her spunk and how she speaks her mind and gets herself in and out of situations. She knows her past will not allow her to marry, so she pursues a romantic liaison with Bran in order to experience it firsthand. The scene where she challenges Bran in their game was priceless!

Bran MacLean is a thief and uses his life experiences to act like the chameleon and blend in. He’s very good at it but Caitrina sees through the charade. I would call him a bad boy with a good sense of honor. He sticks around to protect his queen and to find Caitrina’s sister even if means because caught for the stolen treasure. He wants to do what is right but knows his past could never be honorable to have Caitrina in his life. Bran has got a good head on his shoulders and is more good than bad. He definitely has a unique set of skills that come in handy that is for sure.

What a Lass Wants is riveting and I couldn’t put it down. Rowan Keats knows her history and it can be brutal but definitely realistic. Her style and words put me there in that time and place and I revel in it. I have enjoyed all her stories in this series and she’s definitely become a favorite of mine in the Scottish historical romance genre.

This is a very well researched look at the life and times of people in the vicinity of Stirling, particularly a royal household, in the uncertain politics around the day of King Edward Longshanks. In historical books we tend to follow well off people because they were the ones who could travel and who had some education. Here, a common problem - being accused of treachery - has made one family suspect and the accusation of theft, another common problem especially in clan raids or border areas, has done another family down.

A girl, Caitrina, is attending the queen who is about to give birth to the next royal heir in a few weeks. Her sister is being held by a criminal in the woods, but she can't leave the household, and a complication occurs. The young man accused of theft - rightly - evades his pursuers and since the lord of the manor is not home, Bran assumes a position of authority in the lord's service. This should only be a temporary measure until his pursuers leave the area, but when he and the girl each discover the other has problems, they start to work together.

Fun and frolics include a girl dressing as a boy, a man dressing as an ample woman, swordfighting and a brave lass trying to outwit her captors. We get good looks at the clothing of the day and the food required in the cold October weather. This is an adult romance with the emphasis more on adventure than on the bedroom. Read this for a lovely, lively tale with a good grip on the times.
