This is a story with wonderful prose and spectacular illustrations. I love the mischievous "Little Bear" and his antics while "trying" to go to sleep, Big Bear's attempts to read the "bear book", and the sense of caring that is artfully articulated. However, it is the illustrations that warm my soul more than anything else. My 11 year old had a hard week and pulled this off the shelf last night and asked me to read it to her, just to relax at bed time. We both enjoyed the story, marveled at the pictures again (trying unsuccessfully to choose our favorite) and enjoyed a bedtime moment like we used to when she was little. It was delicious! I was delighted to know that memories from years gone by can still provide a sense of security for my daughters. What more could I possibly say to recommend this book? Buy it. Read it. Enjoy it.

PS One reviewer indicated that their children are now afraid of the dark as a result of reading this book. Please don't let this dissuade you from trying "Can't You Sleep Little Bear". Our take on the story is that this helps kids with a fear of the dark by showing them that, when bedside lights aren't enough, the moon is there to take care of "the dark all around us" and that there is nothing to be afraid of. I think it is a terrific bedtime story.

Grandchildren have loved this book for years! For the very young ones it's a great story to fall asleep with ~ they love Little Bear's antics. For the older ones it's still a nice story ~ a college student grandchild recently mentioned this book as part of learning to go to sleep in the dark. It's for the "Little Bear" in all of us!
One of my favorite books to read my grandchildren! They love it, and so do I! Comforting, and very sweet! This is one that I can read over and over, and still love!
my mother used to read this to me when I was little so I wanted these for my own baby. Beautifully drawn pictures, the sentences are repeated a few times so the child can follow and learn the words. love reading this to my baby, who although is very young and doesnt know how to read yet, seems to enjoy being read to. It is quite a long book but will work very well for bedtime (your baby will be asleep by the end of the book, hopefully)
It was 9 years ago I bought this book for my son. I read it to him every night for months. He enjoyed the pictures and the repetitiveness of the story. To this day I think I can still repeat the book word-for-word.
The story is simple a child who comes up with an excuse not to go to bed. Any parent of a preschooler knows this routine very well and I was happy to point out that to my son as we read it. I find the ending very comforting to both parent and child.
Now he's 11 and I'm looking to get a couple of copies of this and the other Little Bear books. One copy so that he will have them to read to his children and another copy to leave at Grandma's.
This was our third copy two for our kids, and one for a new cousin. The repetitive back and forth conversation ("Can't you sleep, Little Bear?" "I'm afraid of the dark.") is great for setting a calming atmosphere for small children who need to settle down to sleep. Big Bear is cited as "he" in the book, but we tend to skip the pronoun and let the kids make "Big Bear" be whatever sex they would like. The drawings are tender and just the right level of detail for small children.
Cute story, but not a great story if you are trying to help your child not be afraid of the dark and sleep well on his own. At the end of the book there is no real solution helping the little bear do not be afraid of the dark he just falls asleep. I feel like this book actually ended up making my son more scared. Just not a great one for helping kids not be afraid of the dark and sleeping.
I read this book to my kids when they were young. I am grandparent guest reader in April at my granddaughter's kindergarten class. I chose this book to read there. Just love it. Can't you sleep little bear addresses he dark at nighttime.
